probably best asked in the linux section.
its free (open source) / very stable / tons of free software
It's great if you want a free solution to get away from microsoft's shitty software.
Your PC won't be prone to all those nasty virii, trojans and worms that target Windows.
Sure, there are Linux virii etc, but not half as many as there are for Windows.
Also, once you get the hang of Linux, you can compile your own kernel to have an OS that's tailor made for your particular system's hardware.
And, you can install only the software you need/want. Result: zero bloat.
And... as 4play said, it's FREE.
I think you would have to try to get a linux virusOriginally Posted by uNz[i]

There are lots of good ones for n00bies, Madrake is as userfriendly as they come, and SuSe isn't hard either tho' it's slightly more advanced.
But if you want something free you might want to try ubuntu, http://shipit.ubuntulinux.org/ <-order a disc free from there.
Versions of suse or mandrake can probably be bought fairly cheap with linux mags, if you can find any. If you live in the UK or Germany for example, you shouldn't have any problems finding mags with distros.
If you wanna' try a live cd or something you might have success with DSL, it's only 50 megs to dl, so you won't need to use your mum's broadband much.

You might also want to have a look around this forum, there should be topics treating this kind of question.

I don't know the specifics, but from what I understand it's a server os.
But if it works as a desktop OS then you have your brother to help you with it as well. And it doesn't hurt to have someone around who have tried it.
(I'm assuming you haven't tried linux before btw, if you know what you are doing then it could be cool to try gentoo, or slackware. I wouldn't go for that the first thing I did if I were you, tho'.)
