cable is basically run through the public cable line...the more users the slower ur connection can/may get. it is also public so hackers can easily get to ur computer if you have no firewall and such...
that wont happen with DSL. it is on a private phone line so ur speed is basically the same all throughout however it isnt nearly as fast as a cable connection...

i have cable and no complaints...way better/faster and very reliable....

but i guess DSL/CABLE are both great...anything that beats having dialup!

    It all depends...

-The contention ratio (50:1, 20:1 etc.)
    -Time of day

    I'd say ADSL is better...

Over here in the UK business broadband comes with 20:1 contention which means for every one person in your area there are 20 others. Also you can get around 2Mbps downstream... which equals around 250KB

The upstream is shit though around 256Kbps which means around 32KB.

ADSL router, filter, modem etc costs around £80 max

This is all for around £45 p/m

Not bad, I wouldn't know much about cable though, ADSL's the thing around here..or satellite broadband
£45 wow bit steep. what isp you with (uk)

Well i know plenty of ppl in my city that have adelphia cable service. I know a lot and adelphia promises around 2700k d/l speed. I get always 2800k to 3100k always. The same goes with all my freinds. So form my knowledge ive never seen much of a slow down.

it really just depemds on your isp and what kind of speed they are willing to give you.
I have slow cable connection at 328kbs down and 128 kbs up but I'm pretty happy with it

BOTH cablemodems and A/DSL lines have to connect to the internet at some point, and if your ISP only has a OC-3/T-3 (~45mbps) line for 100+ connections it's going to be slow when everyone's using it.

However, if you're sending files to someone else on the same ISP that might still go rather fast...
