I have a m6809 notebook... and i am trying to install windows 64 bit OS, but it appears that I need to create a new partition on my hard drive or destroy everything that exists on my one and only c drive now.

Use 'Partition Magic' to resize the current partition to something smaller and the create a new one with the new remaining space.
It's reliable but there is a chance that it could screw up and all your data lost so...
backup the unreplaceable files just incase (i doubt anything will happen though, but it's better to be safe than sorry).
