Should it be banned?

Millions of fish have their faces ripped in half simply for the hunt.

There is a plan to stop this but at present you must obtain a liscence and pay "Swim Fee's"

This is a big big money business too.

Yet it's still cruel.

The fisherman, if you get caught killing anything you have caught by the baliffs of that fishery or by a NRA official you are in trouble.

Besides you throw them back so they can be caught again, if you catch your 20lb carp you put it back so that next time you catch it it could be 30lb

@Dan ..... Yes that is true, and if it were banned the numbers of fish would decline due to no one bothering to stock the lakes/ponds etc.
It is actually governed more closely now so that minimum cruelty is caused

What if it's a big bastard pikey pike. That picks on the other fish, can you kill that.

Yes, but that would be compulsary at that Venue, there will be a request sign to say "Pike must be destroyed" .
Altho they may have changed the laws on that

At lot of lakes are specially stocked purely for the purpose of fishing.

In t'other thread JP asked if it was different to fox hunting because a fox is a mammal. I believe it is. Fish run on instinct, there is little or no cognitive thought, in fact fish are partially controled by their lateral lines - bypassing their ickle brain for most motor functions. They've really not much idea of what's going on. Comparing a gudgeon to a fox is quite unrealistic.

That doesn't mean that we should torture them but it does make the argument for bannage a little different to the fox hunting one. I think using a barbless hook and the right type of nets makes the concept a little more palatable, at least.

I'm not sure if anyone will argue that a fish has just as much right to live as a fox or whatever but there is a clear distinction as far as I'm concerned. I've no qualms about swatting an irksome fly or exhaling and killing a million bacteria, it is all relative.

Fishing provides a great many people with a means of relaxing and enjoyment, to curtail that for the sake of what a fish will forget a few seconds later doesn't make sense, to me.
