    With the Telezapper
    http://www.telezapper.com/

When you or your answering machine picks up a call.
The TeleZapper emits a tone that tells the telemarketer's computer your number is disconnected.
Within seconds, your number is dropped from that computer's list
As your number is eliminated from more and more lists, you'll get fewer and fewer of those annoying calls.

oh and if you pay more - it will also emit a high pitched ear defiining sound which will unbalance the telemarketeers eardrums for a week
    nice

    telezapper basically reacts to autodiallers

Just get your number on the National Do Not Call Registry.

Just call 1-888-382-1222 to register your phone number. After it takes effect, it will be illegal for most telemarketers to call you, and they could be fined up to $11,000 for it.

I've registered my cell phone number, and my home phone number.

It's more fun to use the TeleMarketing CounterScript (PDF File)

We got as far as the toothpaste question once!!!

That does'nt work here, I'm ex-directory (which is th same thing) meaning my number is'nt available to anyone other than who I give it to.
Yet I still get calls, the last one I asked how he got my number, he told me the puter dials random numbers til it connects to one, and those annoying calls where there's no one there?.....Quite possibly where the puter has connected to more than 1 number but will only patch 1 thru.

I find the best thing to do is just to say to the person on the phone, "Yeah hold on I'll get you the head of the house"
Then just lay the phone down.
Same as when you get junk mail, if you get a paid envelope with it stuff the contents of your spam into it and post it back to them, remembering the whole time that both the above answers costs these places money and theoretically if everyone done it it would affect their business therefore stopping them doing it

The equivalent in the UK is the Telephone Preference Service , and it does work.

Simply being ex-directory is not enough!

    Not nice at all.

I used to work for a survey company, and belive me I know what they mean by high pitched ear defining sound.

If you want to take it out on someone, take it out on the company not the people doing their crap job... well unless you're a psycho that is.
