In order to get most of your Sound card u need better Speakrs too, Sound card it self wont makes much diffrense.

the only reason i would see to get a new soundcard is to get 5.1 surround sound out of it. i have read in some pc magazines that new soundcards can make a large difference in the quality of your sound. it just depends on how good your onboard sound was to begin with.

as for onboard sound vs sound card...
sheesh, my mobo/chipset is ooooooooooooold.......
VIA KM266/VT8375 (about 4 yrs old already)
with an old ass realtek audio controller
and its on board audio is fine
in fact, even it offers 5.1
not that i need it, my 2 sonys plus a sub do fine
