Hey ezyryder - I prefer at least 192 myself. I don't rip anything less than that, and (usually) will not D/L anything less than that. The reason being that I'm D/L'g full albums only, so I want the quality to be there when listening or especially burning the albums.
I want to repeat Benno's invitation for you to join us over at SoulSeek - you will not be disappointed, plus - we have alot of Jimi Hendrix in the room, but could surely use some more (we know you have some)
In case you don't know how to find us, read THIS pinned topic - it will bring you right to us. We're all waiting for you - and all those high quality full album rips as well !!!
Hope this helps, and hope to see you there soon.
Oh no.
Don't use CBR (unless 320 kbps). Use VBR for best quality.
For bitrates around 180 - 220 kbit/s (average) with mp3 use --alt-preset standard with Lame 3.90.2.
For smaller files use ogg Vorbis.
Ogg is not a mp3 format but there is no really good mp3 format (=VBR) for low bitrates.
128 is the way to go
If i'm looking to make a cd of tunes for the road etc then 128 is what i look for (more tunes per cd) but for my good quality stuff 192.
