The MPEG layer 3 audio codec significantly compresses the original audio source with very little loss in sound quality. The compression up to 12:1 produces a very little degradation. Tighter compression can be achieved, but it will result in sound degradation.

MP3 also filters extra data from music tracks, removing information that represents sounds outside the average person's hearing range. While this reduces the size of the file further, this can also result in some noticeable quality loss when listened to on high-end audio equipment.

To give you an idea about data filtering, one minute of CD-quality music is equal to about 10 MB of data. One minute of MP3 music at 128 KB/second is equal to about 1 MB. (Many audiophiles insist that MP3 music should be "ripped" — ie, made from CD-quality tracks-at no less than 256 KB/second, which is about 1/5 the size of the CD — quality track.)

The bitrate, simplified, describes how many storage 'bits' one second of audio data will use on disc, whether on a hard drive or a removable CD-R or DVD.

Aside from the reduced storage space needed for music in MP3 format, one of the format's greatest advantages is that a song can be broken into pieces, and each piece will still be playable. This makes it very suitable for streaming over Internet connections.

MP3-format music can be played on computers, handheld MP3 players, and special CD/DVD players that are specifically designed to play MP3 files. Generally speaking, MP3 cannot be played on older CD players and in many car stereos.
