are you worried that you could be sharing copyrighted files on p2p networks accidently. well the nice people at the mpaa have released a tool which will scan your hard drive for any possible copyrighted files.

    http://dtecnet.purestatic.com/ParentFileScan_setup.msi

Im gonna give this tool a try now for a laugh. from what others have said it basically reports any file with a suspicious extension like mp3 or avi.

Hmmm... Is this tried and tested? Where did you get it from?

Parent File Scan is brought to you by DtecNet Software ApS. This free program allows you to search your computer for installed P2P applications as well as movie and music files. You will then be given the option to remove the identified applications and delete infringing movie and music files in a few easy steps. The program does not distinguish between legal and illegal copies, as it is up to the user to determine, whether the files found by the program have been acquired legally, or whether the material should be deleted. Information generated by the program will be made available only to the program's user and will not be shared with or reported to DtecNet Software or any other body.
It sounds like a glorified search tool

    What a bunch of leotards.

Watch out so it doesn't connect to the internet.

I don't think they are above releasing some kind of trojan or something.

    It found
    p2p apps (10)
    music files (9705)
    video files (478)

A bit disappointed with this really. it seems to have missed alot of my files. it does not look for shn or flac files for a start. it also flagged all the mp3's in any of my game folders as copyrighted. looks like the Mpaa is finding out how hard is it to distinguish between copyrighted and not copyrighted files. trackers for bittorent are having the exact same problem.

lol, in that case, you can only assume that those flac and shn files arent copyright...ah well, must be ok to have them then! Good defence, just in case methinks
