I read with interest in the thread about pharmacies that pharmacy's in the UK must provide all drugs on your National Health Service's list.

Does this apply to hospitals? Are all hospitals required to perform all services on NHS's list? All procedures, such as sterilization and abortions?

Are all hospitals and clinics government owned?

There are private run hospitals in the UK, don't know what power (if any) the NHS has over them though.

I believe a private clinic has to apply for a licence to carry out terminations so they are under no obligation to provide the service.

No they don't provide ALL services in all hospitals, that would be impossible. What happens is that authorities make sure that whatever treatment one needs it can be done within a reasonable travelling distance.
There are private hospitals and they can specialise in whatever they wish, however they have to operate within regulatory standards and be suitably equipped to carry out any procedures.

it’s an election with no Democrats, in one of the whitest states in the union, where rich candidates pay $35 for your votes. Or, as Republicans call it, their vision for the future.

Okay, thanks WithCheese, and Vidcc. I was trying to get a handle on what would happen with private hospitals in the US if we went with a national health insurance program. As you know we have quite a few privately owned faith based hospitals. But we have many government subsidized ones also.

I think we are coming into, roughly, something similar to the private school(UK) situation here. Only with much stiffer regulations. If you dont meet the Government Regulations then you are not allowed to perform any operations/surgery and you will receive no 'Referals' from the NHS. In the case of the schools they receive no subsidies if they dont meet the regulations.

It is against the law in the UK, as in most places, to carry out any kind of surgical procedure unless you are a qualified medical practitioner and approved by the General Medical Council. If the General Medical Council strike you off their list then you are finished as a doctor in the UK. You could still carry on however in the 'crank' health business. But you would not be allowed to do any surgery.

This thread seems to go on forever. Does anyone know a 'drug store' pharmacy' 'chemists' ' health shop' 'chinese medicine shop' that can give me some pills for a sore head caused by eye strain?

P.S. Some confusion has been deliberately placed in the above post to allow the continuation of this thread.

Well if someone comes up with something new then maybe your deliberate confusion will pay off.

Alas there will probably be rehashes of the same with nothing being profound.

Please treat us to some of your profoundness. You know, instead of shouting loudly but not actually saying anything.

    Yawn.

    Well.....

Private hospitals can offer what services that want but they must follow certain standards to meet regulatory approval. Usually they are faith based. The one's that offer the full gamut are usually subsidized.
