    Having a "blonde" moment here.

I've installed a new hard drive as a slave and my pc recognises it's there, but how do I initialise it?
Do I have to partition it or something so that I can put files on it?

    (it's a completely blank h/d)

Right click on My Computer and click MANAGE then go down to DISK MANAGEMENT and format the drive with NTFS file system.

You have to format the drive.
Go to Administrative Tools> Computer Management> click on the new drive and format.
