Anyway - to the person who asked the question - whatever u do, make sure u buy Intel Centrino processor
Or maybe you should wait for the new AMD mobile CPUs to come out..IDK how long that will be. Toshibas screens look tight...sonys screens are AMAZING..but theres more to it then that

Alienware Laptop.
I would never buy a laptop, they don';t care what you spend your grant money on. Get a destop, 3 times cheaper and twice as powerfull. You could even get a shuttle (kinda like a mini computer) and take that arround or get a 160GB External hard drive to carry your data from home to college/Uni.
First you should ask yourself what kind of computer you do want.
As much as everyone wants a laptop for awesome gaming like a desktop replacement, you'd probably want to consider a Centrino solution, although the new AMD ones are supposed to be quite nice.
Here are some options to consider:
Sager notebooks, generally gaming notebooks/desktop replacements: See http://www.hypersonic-pc.com/2001/systems-mobile.htm
or http://pctorque.com/products.php
The 3790 is a good solution for power, gaming, and mobile technology.
Those laptops are generally similar to alienwares. Also since you have such a large grant you might want to look into Voodoo laptops (http://www.voodoo.ca/). They have a nice selection of laptops, very expensive, but good paint jobs and support, etc etc.
Of course there's always the powerbooks from apple. Flame away but if you got all that money to spend, you have a very nice portable laptop with the added bonus of the underlying Unix if that would interest you. Definitely an option to consider if you aren't looking for gaming.
Edit: Getting an External Harddrive is a good idea anyway and also a USB thumbdrive. They're nice accessories.
Also if you can get away with it add a nice pair of speakers and a wireless keyboard/mouse.

NEVER a Sony.
Sony has the most proprietary drivers in the world and they are stingy about giving them out.
We will no longer work on any Sony product without the original restore discs and even then it's a pain.
Also, avoid any machine with the Media Center OS like the plague.
