ps, my connection speeds have been between 6.5 and 6.8, well that's what my pc and not my isp tells me, I tend to believe it.

Hitting 325kb/s for a 6mb connect is fucking shit. Im on 3mb and i hit 370kb/s no problem, i stay above 360kb/s the whole time while downloading from websites, newsgroups, ftps and other sources that have the bandwdith needed to feed my speed.

If you have 6mbps, ten your download speed is supposed to be 768kb/s

Just did a speedtest at http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/ , it says I've got 425kb/ps which is a bit better than my 1/2 meg connection.

No it's not, a 1/2 meg connection should run at about 480kb/s

However, if it says 425KB/s then it's about 8 times as fast, which is what it should be.

Erm, 1/2 meg runs at around 56kb/ps(1/2 meg is 576 connection).

No, 1/2 meg is by definition 512kb/s, although it is also has an additional 64kb/s (not available to the end user) sideband for network status signalling making 576kb/s in total. But usable bandwidth after TCP/IP overheads is about 480kb/s which is 60KB/s.

You are getting confused between kb (kilobits) and KB (KiloBytes). There's a big difference, 1KB = 8kb. If you don't get it right you could end up ordering the wrong thing. You wouldn't be happy if you did that.

Note, if you get a 1meg line, that's actually 1088kb/s but you still have 64kb/s which you can't use leaving 1024kb/s. A 4meg line is 4160kb/s, less the 64kb/s sideband which leaves you with 4096kb/s, or 512KB/s.

    @ Lynx
    That totally confused me mate, I read it 3 times(slowly! lol) and it didn't make any sense until I read my post, I put the wrong word in, instead of "runs" I should have put "downloads", what I meant was;
"1/2 meg downloads at around 56kb/ps"

ps, on your previous post, It's 425KB, they've sorted out my line now, they hadn't capped it so I was getting a very unstable 6.5mb+ line, now I've got a very stable 4mb line.

I ran a test of my connection, if you had 6.8 or anything close to that, your download transfer rate should be higher than the 300's. Here are my results of a speed test.

    2005-04-16 07:41:22 EST: 6454 / 710
Your download speed : 6609422 bps, or 6454 kbps.
    A 806.8 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 727184 bps, or 710 kbps.

Bloody line became uncapped again somehow, it shot up to 7.2mb and became very unstable!
All sorted now, they told me they'd fixed the problem and had closely monitored my line overnight, I had been downloading films all night but they didn't mention anything about it! Whoops
