Check if your D500 supports variable bit rate.

If it does, you can usually convert to VBR without loss of quality, but you need a good encoder (such as Lame) to do it...

It doesn't matter which encoder at whatever bittrate you use to recompress an mp3, it will always lose quality.

Personally, I rip with AudioGrabber with the LAME dll. Both are free.
