Is snowboarding not a sport if you are not trying to beat your downhill time?
I have done some pretty spectacular dives and am not one of these people that are "fair weather" or "clear, warm water only" divers, I like to push the limits within safety margins.
Does that mean that it is a sport because I push myself ?
I made a distinction between competitive and activity making a differential..
Diving is called sports diving if it is not commercial diving. Diving is also listed as a dangerous sport for insurance purposes and one can find an increase in life insurance premiums if one regularly participates.

However competition against one's own previous best does not count as far as I am concerned.
