If you`ve got windows XP turn them off in display properties. Right click on your desk top and click properties and you`ll find it in there.

You have to go into the registry to get rid of the shortcut arrows. You really wanna do that

Or, if you have Tweak UI, there is a much easier fix.

Mankers right and i`m wrong, i seem to remember using tweak ui. What`s funny is that you don`t notice them until someone tells you about them or points them out to you, then you just have to get rid of them.
