remember...an air cooling fan cannot cool a component below ambient temperature only a Peltier,phase change ,or freon type system can cool
below ambient temperatures and it is hot in Texas....in the mean time, move
your stuff away from that thermostat as far as possible.

Here's an idea.
Since hot air is (presumably) coming under your door, and then rising (as hot air does) past the thermostat, why not simply make a circular shield from a piece of card and put it around the thermostat to divert the hot air.
If your dad is right about the heat from the computer this should temporarily cure the problem and you can look for a more permanent solution. If it has no effect you have shown that your dad is wrong.
