Thread: Pros and cons of Linux?

  1. #11
The only troubles using linux i have ever had is drivers for printers and webcams. And this realy isn't even a linux problem but IMO a vender problem, we have to get these people to think about the linux community has customers has well has win/mac users.
I can say the same for graphics card makers and game makers it is up to them to make thier wares nix usable not the open source comunity.
Can you imagine if they told Bill he and Stevie boy they are going to have to supply drivers for thier products in the future.
There is no reason that new Canon printer can't have a nix driver on the cd, and no reason for it not to autoinstall has it does in xp, other than Canon doesn't care to.

It's my belief that Linux is no good for home use. I mean you have Windows and Mac OS which beats the balls out of Linux as a whole, although Linux can have some very specialised features which more high end users will appreciate.

For servers and such though, it's second to none. Despite the fact it's extremel efficient and secure, and does the job best (in my opinion) it's also FREE or damn close to it. Small business can save a small fortune (as opposed to paying annual licences to bigger firms...like Sun)

Yeah, I have tried numerous linux distros, especially live CDs. Ubuntu or was it Edubuntu CD got a box up & runnin with generic wireless even! perfect for beginners...unlike Knoppix which has overkill with all the junk packed into the program menu. So it is definately an option ifya need to hook up a beginner with a cheap zero maintenance starter system or whatever.
