Splinter Cell Help

Im playing Splinter Cell...fianly...and im totaly stuck on one of the first missions. I dissarmed the lasers in the court yard...and i have to listen to some conversation in an elevator with a "laser Mic". I get the thing out, and listen to the conversation...about 3/4 of the way up, the red square goes white and my boss (the guy who talks to you on your headset) says, "what the hell are you doing? The mission is over." And i have to try it again...what am i doing wrong? I thought all i would have to do is point the mic at them and waite. What am i missing. Thanks.
