UPDATE:
hey fst. right after some test it was evident both the psu had failed and the motherboard had been flashed.
this left me no option but to purchase a new motherboard and psu. i have bought both these and can tell you the computer is working. i have to reinstall windows ( it comes up with blue screen of death about new hdd controllers..but i was going to do that anyway. so installing windows xp pro () at all should be good!
