You'll need new hardware. Firmware won't cut it.
It depends on what level of router you are talking about. If you mean anything conforming to the current standards (802.11a/b/g) then refer to VB's post.
If you mean one of the so-called Pre-N routers then there's a reasonable chance that a firmware upgrade will be sufficient when the full 802.11n protocol is confirmed.
The hardware requirement won't change unless the manufacturer has encoded too much of the modulation method into the chip and the proposals change. That's not likely to happen at this late stage in the protocol definition.

Well the reason I'm asking this is because I might end up buying that D-link router on newegg that has the Draft N protocol (There's only one on Newegg so no need to link) cause my dell laptop has the draft N card already.

Do you move a lot of data between PCs on your network?
If you can't answer yes to both of those questions then you almost certainly have no requirement for 802.11n. You probably still don't need it if you can only answer yes to the second question.

Well I'll be moving movies and games between the computer and laptop though and the typical speed for the N is pretty fast compared to G when I looked it up in wikipedia.
