how much should u share without getting a knock on the door?
u said some student got fined thousends of pounds, how much was he sharing?

thousands and thousands of mp3s.
You only get a knock on the door if you're involved in production. They won't knock on the door if you're downloading a few mp3s any more than they will if you are taping something off the TV.

Take sensible precautions, as detailed on this board. Don't do it for pecuniary gain and don't worry about it.
You are more likely to get your ISP hassling you for excessive use, but I never have and I am uploading and downloading almost all of the time.

Also, if you're sharing pre-releases of movies or even recently released movies you are far more likely to get a warning letter from your ISP (forcibly sent to them by MPAA...)
Even then, it's usually a matter of removing the 'offending content' for a few months and they won't hassle you.

The gov't doesn't care if you share files, only the artist/record companies do. They stand to lose money (in theory) if you are sharing copyrighted music. The chances of getting caught are very slim.
