My dad wants to convert his vhs to dvds and im thinking, cool i'll snag a dvd burner out of this, how would i do it what hardware would i need?

lol, not quite man, if ur dad spits out the cash, buy a dvd recorder/vcr it captures vhs to dvd-r, but the qaulity isnt any better here is a philips dvd recorder

you will need a video capture card. this will convert your analog vhs signal into digital form.
you will need plenty of space on your hard-drive. anywhere from 2-4 gigs(or more) per hour of video depending on the quality at which you encode it.
after that it is a matter of utilizing dvd authoring software to create and burn the dvd.
getting a multi-format dvd burner is the wisest thing to do. you will increase your chance of playback compatibility among the differing brands of players.
