If you plan on clocking your way to performance either the 3200 or 3500 Venice cores will work.
Currently priced between $190- 220 they are the new 2500 Bartons...easily OCed and relatively cheap.

If the budget allows, the 3700 San Diego ($275) is the poor man's FX...big L2 cache and better memory controller.

The Winchesters are a bit thin on the ground at places like Newegg, but common at many "budget" distributors (like eSys) that our shop deals with.
My 3500 has been a stellar performer, but I'd go with a San Diego given the chance.

I wasn't aware those were still available. Personally I think the Venice core might be a little more suitable.
    There obsolete? Fuck.

    What's the problem, LP?

The Venice/San Diego's are better and the prices are similar to the older Winchesters.

I rather think the problem is that he got a Winnie, when he could have got a Venice for the same price.

I've got a Winnie for sale too, if the price is right.

I don't see that as a necessarily a bad thing.
My Winnie will hold it's own with most Venice cores up to 2.6GHz or so.
After that it's down to luck whether your Venice will go too much further.

San Diegos are a whole 'nother story...they'll kick my ass.

Ok..bringing back this thread Im thinking of building another 939. Is the athlon X2 3800 worth the extra 100 bucks over the 3700 san diego? I would think so but im just seeing if yall have any experiance. thanks!

    Also, would these be good?

    mushkin XP4400 Dual Pack 1GB (2 x 512MB)(PC4400)
This memory runs at DDR550 so what would I set it at to run good with a 1Ghz FSB?

At this point I don't see much benefit to going dual-core unless you are heavily into office apps. The (reputed) hotrod CPUs of the moment are the 939 Opterons (1.8's clocking in excess of 3GHz on air!) Essentially they are detuned FX's.

    Don't fuck around.
Just get the DFI LP Expert and be done with it.

I am still recommending the Patriot EP RAM. Biggest bang for the buck.

Does that mobo look good? and what about the processor duel?

lets just say I have ram that can run at 500mhz...how do I clock that with my fsb and what ratio? Thats where im confused

Oh, and the DDR2 memory sticks look awesome! but they are all 240 pin and the boards are all 184...is DDR2 not good yet or what?
