I don't want to spend the money on the Plextor 716A, because Blu-ray and other changes are just around the corner.

    I'm leaning towards the NEC-3550.

Dirt cheap, efficient, reasonably fast, and bullet-proof.

    Thoughts?
The Sony dru-810 is a benq 1640 clone...its a pretty good drive nothing to fear there. You can also cross flash to a 1640 then receive all the support from the qsuite tools http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread....hlight=dru-810

    Merry Xmas all

    That's something to consider.

Nothing wrong with Benq, after all.

Would that there was similar support for my DRU-510...

Your experience with the Sony drive sounds exactly like mine. Indeed, it is sitting on the shelf in front of me simply because I couldn't be bothered to throw it in the bin yet. Won't be buying another Sony drive in a rush, no matter who actually makes it.

On the other hand my NEC drive has worked flawlessly for about 18 months now, maybe longer. Only 2 or 3 coasters in that time, and those were because of bad media.

    A weighty recommendation.

The thing about the Sony that pisses me off is it acts like a firmware upgrade is precisely what it needs-I put any old disk in and it may or may not spin, but apparently won't read in any case.

The funny part is the software cd that came with it (no drivers) takes right off as if nothing is wrong.

I just got the NEC 3550a for christmas.
I've only burnt 1 dvd so far but it went fine.

It has all the features and is really cheap, altho it's a bit on the loud side when it gets to reading DVDs or CDs.

EDIT: My drive came with Nero 6.0, I just downloaded 7.0 so I dont have any opinion on the bundled.

cd/dvd-rom drives and burners don't use brand/model-specific drivers. they're pretty much designed to work with the generic drivers that are already built into the operating systems. "where are the drivers for my cd/dvd" is one of the few PC-related things you should never need to worry about.
