If you are worried about Big bRoThEr trying to trace and hassle you make sure you use the following:

    A/ A decent firewall

B/ Make Use Of the KaZaA L privacy patch

C/ Install Peer Guardian which bans all the RIAA etc sites

As Citizen Smith used to say 'Power to the People'

PS My heart really goes out (not) to the film companies who have recently announced xxx $ billion profits from DVD sales.

Do I dl that Peer Guardian thing from Kazaa then ??? I have been searching for it.. or is there a site that I dl it from ???

Yes its illegal to share, and its illegal to have a copy of something you didnt pay for.
So my question is... two fold...
    1. If you have a movie on your pc right, say daredevil, and they buy the dvd, does that mpg on your pc become legal for you to have? Or does the DMCA make that illegal too?
    2. If you have the DVD first, and then get a copy of the file off the net, is that illegal?
doesnt the *gay * DMCA *gay*, make it illegal to cirumvent any digital encryption, or copyright? if so, then both of my questions are prolly yes, they are illegal.
    any one know for sure?
I beleive it's legal only if you rip/copy the movie yourself.

As for what's the chance of getting caught, it's almost certain if you use a computer in a college in the US, otherwise, the chance is almost none - as in 1 to 5 000 000... if you live in a non-English country then the chance is 0.
