hello!
i had windows 98 installed on c: and winXP on d: .
then i formatted the c: partition an d installed XP on it
and deleted the windowsXP folders from d: .
still i get an OS selection at startup.
i tried FIXBOOT and FIXMBR from the recovery console but
it still didn't remove the selection screen.
with BOOTCFG you can only ADD to the boot list but not
REMOVE.
can someone help?

You have to edit the boot.ini
In control panel goto performance and maintenance, then system and on the advanced tab select start-up and recovery. Then in the system startup section select edit.
Mine looks like this. Just make sure you delete the right bit.
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect

Careful.. make sure you get the o/s correct:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect
If you use Windows XP Proffessional.. typeing home will give u problems.
