this game actually has a distant connection to diablo.

ex-blizzard employee bill roper (worked on diablo, warcraft, starcraft, etc) founded flagship studios, which managed to produce two games before the company collapsed: hellgate london and mythos. mythos was basically an online diablo imitation that was intended to test the networking code of hellgate london. mythos was going to be offered as a free game, no strings attached apparently. then hellgate london launched and... it turned out that flagship had NO MONEY RESERVED for the purpose of keeping the online-focused rpg afloat in case it wasn't an immediate hit. it was not a hit. a huge commercial failure in fact. so hellgate was only online for about 6 months before flagship shut the servers down, fired all of its employees, and went out of business. probably much to the chagrin of the 4 or 5 suckers who paid 150 u.s. dollars for the hellgate london lifetime subscription. mythos only ever got as far as the early stages of a public beta test.

a korean game studio bought mythos and is currently redesigning it for an asian audience. hellgate london is currently owned by a bank (they accepted ownership of hellgate as collateral for a loan to flagship)... the game is still playable offline, but its online mode no longer works and there is no support for it in the way of patches or expansions.

meanwhile, the newly unemployed mythos development team decided that they had actually enjoyed working together and wanted to continue, and torchlight is the result of that.
