In the ng alt.binaries.teevee, I noticed that posting of NZB files slowed to a trickle a few days ago. The underlying rar and par files were still being posted. Then, yesterday, an entity pretending to be nEwZ[NZB] @NET.world spammed the group with thousands of irrelevant and poorly-put-together posts. I don't know if there's any connection between the Newz[NZB] of the original post, and the spammer describing itself as nEwZ[NZB].

oh go and cry baby usenet is not controlled anyone can post anything what want, you can use any name you want. its not even an spam.

"Usenet is a distributed network, which means that it is not controlled by any single source. Usenet servers from different hosts feed to and pull from one another in order to distribute the information they store, enabling users from anywhere to access the same information as any other user. This distribution also means that Usenet is largely uncensored."

" 1. Usenet is not an organization.

No person or group has authority over Usenet as a whole. No one
controls who gets a news feed, which articles are propagated
where, who can post articles, or anything else. There is no
"Usenet Incorporated," nor is there a "Usenet User's Group."
    You're on your own.

    2. Usenet is not a democracy.

Since there is no person or group in charge of Usenet as a whole
-- i.e. there is no Usenet "government" -- it follows that Usenet
cannot be a democracy, autocracy, or any other kind of "-acy."

    3. Usenet is not fair.

After all, who shall decide what's fair? For that matter, if
someone is behaving unfairly, who's going to stop him? Neither
    you nor I, that's certain.

XFST, you're right, of course. Except about it being spam. It quacked.

There are no rules, as you say, but there are reputations, tendencies, correlations. There are even ng guidelines. They may be as nothing to you, and it's your right to disdain them.

The spammer (or an entity of the same name) is today gone from that ng. It (or something of the same name) is now in a group where a poster of a similar name used to operate. There are some differences. The former poster used to put a lot of mobile formats, tended not to use .par2, organized headers in such a way that the nzb's made sense to indexing services, and did not put "nzb" three times in each header.

The first two sentences are still observed. It's easy to work around the absence of nzb files, just different.

Today on their forum and i was like just wow:

    "[ANNOUNCEMENT] Verify-Signature-newzNZB"

    Example header of their upload:

    " From: nEwZ[NZB] <[email protected]>

If you put it into verifier https://verify.newznzb.info/, but only header field - "Verify-Signature-newzNZB" you get

    root% cmd:verify.newznzb.info --verify newzNZB.sig
echo: Signature made 2017-January-12 17:18:08 using TMP key ID a8d9a84f029b6
echo: Good signature from "nEwZ[NZB] "

TMP key ID changing there is nothing to worry about...

In the case of bad signature or someone FAKED the signature the error is:

    root% cmd:verify.newznzb.info --verify newzNZB.sig

    echo: Signature time check !!FAILED!!

echo: !!BAD!! signature NOT from "nEwZ[NZB] "

from the man page for Verify-Signature-newzNZB :

    "WHY

~? On the usenet you are able to use any name you like, if someone decide become the
same named uploader like we are, there is NO way to stop him/her. There we get to the
point what we can do about it? What if someone start posting FAKE/MALWARE/VIRUS
posts. So we simply implement our own idea of Verify-Signature-newzNZB. We think we are
the first in usenet uploaders who do it this way "

I don't understand how the verify works, but it is good to see nEwZ[NZB] protecting its reputation. At its worst, the impostor was submitting enough material to create 15,000 index entries a day on binsearch. The impostor posts mostly stopped about a month ago. One change that remains is that hardly anybody posts .nzb files to a.b.teevee. But you can find many an .nzb file here on FStalk or get binsearch to create one for you.
