EarthStation V's main selling point was that it used proxies to allow anonymous sharing, and a while back kept digging and repeating the point (about as much as BIC's question of the number of users ) that Kazaa Lite could not protect its users as well.

Although kinda loose, this does in some part enforce that

Another VERY GOOD reason to use a FIREWALL

This is BAD!!

dont think the fw helps with this kind of thing UKman, using a proxy/s should tho' - there's a thread here thats very helpful
I agree of course - but having someones IP does give the opportunity to try and hack into the persons PC - a firewall is GOOD protection [/b][/quote]

I mentioned their selling point - I never mentioned their credibility

That went to hell when they posted personal details as a "response"

EDIT: BTW sorry to go off-topic. Just that it seemed relevant to the whole showing IP thing

I think as people have pointed out in previous topics, IP addresses are basically useless unless you are actively targeting someone or can link it to illegal activity.
If someone hosts & posts a picture on a board like this, I believe its possible to know the ip of everyone who views that picture as they must request the host for it. The picture could for example be your avatar, so, all your ip addresses are easily accessible.

But i suppose its info you'd prefer not to give away so easily.

Usually if you dont know, then you dont have

If you have a router supplied by your ISP, i should check with them.

If you dont have a router:
Windows XP has a somewhat limited firewall - its better than nothing - you can check that out by looking at network connections in the Control Panel and look at the advanced properties for your Internet Connection.

Failing that, get the freeware version of Zone Alarm, or whatever you think is best.

Whatever you do, i suggest you find out as soon as possible though.

Peace

If you don't want other people to figure out your IP, then you should unplug your modem and/or network connection.

But IPs are usually useless information. In this case certainly, because they can't be combined with a person.
