The occasional "x" marked with flourescent spray paint is actually far more effective, but the "tree-huggers ( you know who you are&#33

seem to find this offensive.
Hence, breadcrumbs.

This is okay, unless Billy Dean is hungry.

A mere birthday (Belated Happy Birthday, Billy!) certainly wouldn't daunt him.

He is particularly fond of Triscuits and Ritz crackercrumbs.
But, any port in a storm and it is always blustery around Cape Billy...

I have always found that the Apple provides me with a stout enough heart to proceed.

However twine in preference to the breadcrumbs for escape from a labyrinthine puzzle. They have failed both Hansel and Gretel, so I have no trust in them. I find the Minotaur too deadly a foe to rely on breadcrumbs alone.
