It is an update
Windows downloaded it, installed, and did not remove these temp files.
It should be safe to delete.
If you do not trust me 1. Do a search in C for those files eg. avifil32.dll,basesrv.dll (remember to search for hidden and system files and you will find the same files (with the same size and date! probably in system32,dll cache, messenger etc- which means they are properly installed.(which means you have duplicates)
If you do not trust me 2. Remove the folder elsewhere\trash can, restart, and open ie, messenger, msn and they should work - dont worry that file does not contain important system files.
If you do not trust me 3. right clik it,properties, make hidden
If you do not trust me 4. ask again to "bold fortune" who is the guru of what is deletable in xp at http://www.bit-quest.com/forums/index.php?showforum=5
buona fortuna supportodiparte
