under the advice of one of those tweaking websites i deleted the contents of my windows\prefetch directory, after a couple of days (and emptying the recycling bin (d'oh&#33), i realised windows was booting a lot slower, i checked out the prefetch directory and it was empty

i have a feeling i was only supposed to delete the .pf files, can anyone tell me what the other file is and what its contents should be?

There's nothingb wrong with deleting the contents of the prefetch directory. Most people don't need it. It's an unneccesary service in most cases, but you may have turned it off be accident.

Check out Prefecth Clean and Control

Free, and it's really straight forward. Of course, no install, but see if it works. Try changing the settings for prefetch.
