Thread: Server

1. #11
I haven't used my server for webhosting (yet), but I use SME Server on my rinky-dink machine. You can basically take any piece of crap machine and turn it into a server by installing *nix which is more reliable and requires less maintenance or installing Windows Server for all your virus vulnerability needs . But of course, the better the machine, the better the speed, uptime, ect. But, I've seen SME run on real pieces of crap and work well. It's non-graphical by the way.

or setting up one at home.

apache will do it.

Is there a step-by-step guide I can use to set it up.

Also, can I use this to make my own website? If so, how?
Apache is a HTTP server it serve's files nothing more. YOu cannot deisgn a site in it, if thats what your asking. you'll need Frontpage or Dreamweaver or some other Web Design Package. [/b][/quote]
So if I use Frontpage or Dreamweaver I can make my own webhost and run my own website?

A good connection meas one that is always on AND has a good UPLOAD speed.
if you want an FTP server, BulletProof FTP server is supposd to be good.

You can use whatever OS you want

win xp has IIS 5
win 2003 has IIS 6
most *nix distros use apache
There are 10 types of people in the world those who understand binary and those who dont

Yea, you can use any OS. But IMO Server 2003 is more secure.
