What is the max temp. a cpu can run at, full load, with out doing damage to itself?

What chip?
Most chpis will have a safe protect feature that it will shut itself down at a certain temp. This temp can vary anywhere between 65C and 85C depending on the chip

that only with Intel's........... AMD doesnt have that feature
I thought the A64's did the thermal shutdown thing at 70c. [/b][/quote]
never heard of that......... could very well be true though..... with CPU's that expensive, they SHOULD add that feature

On-die thermal throttling
I guess they do. Good I suppose.

I wonder if all 64's have it, 'cos some aren't expensive nowadays.

On-die thermal throttling, is that like cool N quiet or something else entirely?

It means that if your heatsink was to fall off it wouldn't fry your chip.

Er, yes

It seems to be the same thing as on P4's, ie that it throttles the clockfrequency if it overheats, like it will if the cooling falls off.

Better than the instant shutdown at 70c I thought they had at first.

The regular Athlon XP's also have the thermal throttling option. this turns down the speed of your cpu if it is running too hot making it not work as hard and giving it time to cool down.
I have this option disabled and have my computer set to shutdown if my cpu temp raches past 65C.
So yes this option is also available for Athlon XP's

The Asus board will come with a drive and utilities cd. It will include all the drivers, and a utitily called Asus Probe, which will display all the temps and fan speeds, and you can set warning levels for everything.
