Ram is a kind of plug and play situation. just make sure it's seated fully. It takes more pressure then you would think is needed.
And if possible, get same brand/speed that you have before if your adding new stuff to work dual channel with your old.
I've heard of some incompatibilities if you don't use the same brand. Is that true?

No it does not have to be the same brand, nor the same speed. However for best performance it is usually advised to match your ram as best as you can.
EDIT note that if you have a stick of fast and a stick of slow ram, both will run at the slower speed.

I have 1GB of RAM installed and my free (unused) memory rarely drops below 750MB or so.
2GB would be complete overkill IMO....not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's probably several hundred dollars that could be better used elsewhere.

When I am playing battlefield and minimize it back to desktop for a second it sayy like virtual memory running low...anyone know why...bf1942 dont take up 512megs of ram...
