depends on how you interpret "close to him." the anti-kerry guys say they were further away (on other boats) than the pro-kerry guys (on the same boat), but that their opinions are more valid because they outranked kerry's subordinates. doesn't really contradict Rat's statement, imho. since they invoke the hierarchical structure of the u.s. military, though, it also follows that one's peers are no more entitled to pass judgment than one's subordinates are, 'cause the military is not a democracy. in rare circumstances, peers do submit comments about each other, but review of one's performance is ultimately the domain of his superiors. the premise provided by Swift Boat Vets For Truth, as to why one must pay any more attention to their accusations than to the available documents or kerry's former crew, is sort of weak.
