Not long ago, I didn't have enough money to eat. I lost everything except my car and a few belongings. Now, my first thought is how nobody was there to help me, ( except my sweethear who stayed beside me) now I tell them to get the hell away from my car. I know there is jobs around, we have 5 openings on my shift alone

Begging is a lifestyle choice, not a way of making ends meet between jobs, that is what welfare is for.

I don't support it, it is entirely their choice.
Aren't we in the trust tree, thingey?

It took about 3 months before he first said thanks.

First time i saw him smile.

    Beautiful eyes.....

First full sentence was "happy holidays, have one on me......."

He gave me a bottle of wine he must have begged for quite some time.

I later learned it was a christmas-gift from his regular liquorstore.

I don't tell this to show how good i am; my guess is i received more than

    i gave.

Like the moments he wasn't there on his regular spot, but left a note

appologising he couldn't receive my daily treat.

    Etc, etc....

I must admit I would never turn a begger/tramp/homeless person away without talking to them first. I believe in treating all people as human regardless of their circumstances. You can normally tell the frauds from the needy.
I once spoke with a homeless guy who had nothing but his music, i regualy saw him playing his acoustic guitar busking for cash. I asked him what he wanted from life and he replied "just a job and a home to call my own"
After meeting him regualy on my way to work I asked him again "what do you want from life?" The reply he gave brought a lump to my throat; "I want people to hear my finished Rock Opera, I'll never make money with it but the music is all I have left."
I've never seen him since. I hope that he is now making money writing songs to be sung by the famous.

    I agree.

Giving money to a "beggar" in my city is basically just giving money to someone for their next fix.

If I saw someone of genuine need the I would, perhaps, help them. However, I live next to the train station and I've seen the same faces I've seen for the last 5 or so years. I know for a fact some of them are well housed and on benefits but they still hang around and scrounge off people who actually earn what little money they have.

I'm open minded about a lot of things but begging is something I really hate. Like Hobbes says that is what welfare is for.
