Being a bit of a handyman myself () I think this may be the answer
Take a cardboard or a thin piece of wood, fold and place it between two pieces of board with the fold up; the boards are then put in a vice in a particular way. Start the bit with the screw point in the fold, using a 1-in. bit, and bore a hole 1/2 in. deep. When the cardboard or thin piece of wood is taken from the vice a square hole will impress your incredulous friends.Well done Manker.

Well, the last sentence is mine and the silly American author spelled vice with an 's' - so I changed that part at least
I plan on beating him to death with his kids. I'll use them as a bludgeon on his face. -
