I've got this XP visual theme I downloaded from themexp.org, it’s perfect except for the image they’ve used for the start button
Is there anyway I could edit it?

I don't have SP2, looks like there's an SP1v though - will this let me edit out the start button image?
you need this kind of patch before you can fully use custom themes for XPOriginally Posted by Mr. Mulder
but stylexp seems to be working ok?
you didnt say you were using that toolOriginally Posted by Mr. Mulder
when you used such patch you dont need programs like StyleXP to change your theme
i just want to change one image that's part of a theme, the image that's on the start button, i tried opening up one of the .theme files thinking that it could be done in Photoshop, but the file isn't recognized
You will need two applications in order to successfully edit any .msstyle:
"StyleBuilder" from TGT Soft. And a decent image-editing program such as Photoshop or Paintshop Pro.
StyleBuilder is used to modify/edit the style's configuration and compile the file while the image editor is the application that is used to actually edit the .bmp's and .png images. At present, StyleBuilder is the only solution available to edit .msstyle files, to my knowledge.
ResEdit (also from TGT Soft) could also accomplish this feat, however, it is much, much more of a pain to do so, IMO.
This link will give you a brief tutorial of what is exactly involved in doing so:
