    No, it would not.
    The SATA Plextor is nice cause you can eliminate the bulk of the IDE cable, but it's performance is really not all that spectacular.

    But you DO want a SATA HDD...my preference is for Seagates.

    VB handcarves his drives from whalebone during the brutal Canadian winters (i.e. 11.5 months of the year).

    That drive is fine.

    For sata installation you simply put in the supplied floppy disk at install time if necessary (press F6 I think).

    The ATI graphics card is never going to be SLI capable, so you are just wasting money getting an SLI motherboard. Look for the equivalent without SLI and save some money.

    On the other hand, the PSU in that case probably only has a 20 pin mobo connector, you need a 24 pin connector for that mobo, so spend the money you just saved on the SLI to get a much better PSU. You may have difficulty finding one integrated into the case so you probably need to look for separate units.

    so wait I can keep the ati graphics card look for another mobo? and then get a better (edit) oo power supply unit? Can you give stuff you recommend, I havent picked parts in so long. I prefer to work w/ ides instead cause i have no clue how to set up an ata, like the cable connections, this mobo seems so complicated, im reading the manual to try figuring stuff out

    will ide fade out in the future like is ata suppose to replace it or something? Whats the whole deal w/ the ide and ata?

    hows this?

    IDE = P(arallel)ATA.
    New = S(erial)ATA.

    Not much difference except that the cabling is easier and thinner. IDE will be around for a while, but there's no real problem with SATA.

    The only problem with SATA is that it is too new for the drivers to be included with XP, so you need to use the driver diskette (provided with the mobo) when installing XP. Not a problem, just press F6 when the prompt comes up, then insert the diskette and off it goes. Always assuming you've included a floppy drive.

    But stick with the NEC DVD burner, the Plextor SATA drive is expensive for no apparent benefit.

    As for mobo, the simple answer is to go for the A8N rather than the A8N-SLI.
    Better still, look at this thread posted by imasoldier. It has some recommendations for both mobo and psu.

    Anyway, well past time for bed, I'll have another look tomorrow.

    So update on my friends comp, wow parts have really changed since i last made a computer, mostly its all ATA, I'd like to try it out but I'm just afraid I won't be able to set it up, plus he doesn't want to get a floppy drive. I might want to try out an SATA but if its the hard drive it will boot without a hard drive first and then you have to install the driver for it in bios or just press F6 in the boot screen? About the cables, i can't find any pictures on an SATA hard drive like the connectors, does it only have one cable connector? Do I have to config jumpers and where do I plug in the power supply.

    AHA! Gotcha.

    This is not true anymore.
    Nforce4 boards present the SATA drives to Windows as an IDE drive...no driver/ floppy/F6 is required.

    You only need to F6 a driver in if you are RAIDing.
