Why do people (it seems overseas) add the word the when saying Go (yourteamname)?
It sounds weird.
We say Go Redskins!!!
not Go The Redskins

if you say "go the tigers" you are shouting for them to do well
if you say "go tigers" you are asking them to leave
I have no idea for the real reason other than it might be one of those language differences
it’s an election with no Democrats, in one of the whitest states in the union, where rich candidates pay $35 for your votes. Or, as Republicans call it, their vision for the future.
in the UK we tend to say come on rather than go
I reckon it's easier than that.
We say 'Come on the reds' but we say 'Come on United'. We only put 'the' in the chant if colour is involved. However, there is an exception - Arsenal fans call their team 'The Arsenal' 'cos they're twats.
We never say 'go' anything when watching sport.
Ok then Come on The whatever. Why is 'the' added?Originally Posted by manker

My theory is because the team name has "The" in it that overseas folks actually say it when referring to the team. Come On The Tigers!!!
We on the other hand probably treat the team's individuals as being the animal, weapon etc that they are named.
If a player plays for the Tigers he therefore is a Tiger and not a The Tiger so we say Come On or Go.....Tigers!!!
