Probably the most certain course would be a complete reformat and fresh reinstall of the OS.
Pain in the ass, granted, but it will work.
yep this is the BEST soloution, it's gr8 when u wipe your PC and then turn it on again and it's super fast and super fresh

I agree with the previous posts, format! I format mine every month, keeps it fresh and fast! ive got a 16 second start up! 
(got a amd xp 2000+ with 512DDR)
