That is a fast track to making a crap computer. The motherboard is the single most important part of the PC. A good motherboard is essential for getting the most out of any of your components.

Think about it - everything plugs into the motherboard, from your CPU to your floppy drive. If your motherboard is crap, then your PC is crap.
Imagine putting a Ferrari engine into an old Volkswagen Beetle and you'll see what I mean.

It's actually wise to get the best motherboard you can afford so you have plenty of upgrade options later.

I'll make a recommendation for you: get a Asus A7N8X Deluxe; IMO it's the best Athlon-based motherboard currently on the market. Or you could wait and get a later revision which supports the new AMD Athlon FSB speed.

    currently:

    Athlon 2700+
Asus A7N8X Deluxe (especially recommended by Lamsey )
    512MB Corsair XMS3500 DDR RAM (2-2-2-5 333MHz or 2-2-2-6 400MHz)
    GeForce 3Ti200 64MB (209/500)
    Lite-On 52/24/52 CD-RW (one day old )
    16x DVD-ROM
    Thermaltake W008R 420W PSU
Some crappy copper heatsink, will replace soon
Aluminium Case (side window (waste of money ))

    that's about all...

hoping to get a new gpu around about when doom3/half life 2 come out, and might get another 512MB RAM, and of course, a better heatsink/fan to get my rampant cpu temp (44 degrees in mbm5 (though i seriously doubt this, it's more like 51 in bios)) under control

Great value for money and a good choice.

I have to say I'd still prefer to look for an nForce2-based motherboard.
