Basically, people can have whatever usernames they like, nobody has exclusive rights to a username from another site.

I completely agree. If someone wants to sign up here as Retro, then they are more than welcome to.

And the concern is that someone signs up using a name of someone respected within the filesharing community must have an ulterior motive. What would you do if someone signed up as RedBeard?

While I agree that choice of usernames should be that, there has to be a line drawn whereby it becomes obvious that someone is abusing the good name of someone else (for whatever reason).


A few years back, someone did sign up as Retro at two different places. Within a short period of time, both accounts were disabled, because the site owners felt that it was a name abuse case.
