Hard Rock/Heavy Metal used to mean "everything that is harder than pop rock". By today's standards that would include the 80's bands like Iron Maiden, Ozzy, etc, but also Linkin Park and Korn, and those grave bastards Metallica. However so many people have thier own definitions of metal, so its hardly a fair comparison anymore.
