I haven't read that but FIFA do have the final say as to who gets it, and they're currently investigating the incident.

I suppose if it transpires that all Materazzi said was something like; 'I do believe we'll trounce you if it goes to penalty kicks, you bounder', then Zidane will get the award taken off him.

Fifa wants to clarify the circumstances of the incident and the organisation's president Sepp Blatter has hinted that Zidane could be stripped of his World Cup best player award.

"It's not Fifa that decides who wins this award but an international committee of journalists," he told La Repubblica newspaper.

"All the same, the Fifa executive committee has the responsibility of intervening when it is a matter of conduct which goes against the ethics of the sport.

"That is why I gave the orders to our disciplinary commission to investigate what happened.

"To see him (Zidane) acting like that leaves me vexed, both for himself and for all sense of fair play."

Zinedine Zidane will for the first time this evening talk about the headbutting incident which had him ejected from the final match of the World Cup. According to Canal Plus, Zidane will answer reporters questions this night on a live broadcast. While there have been many rumours about exactly what it is that Italian player Materazzi might have said to Zidane to elicit the violent response, Zidane has refused thus far to comment. Materazzi has, for his part, accepted that he did insult Zidane.
