HOw do they found out you "uncapped" your modem?

And how do i know if they "capped" my Modem with the speed they offered me at the contract?

Just wanna know, cuz my connection gets slower by the day, i remember the day they installed this thing IT WAS ing fast, but it keeps getting slower, some one said it was because i had some virus or something, but I FORMATTED and installed my XP all over again and still the same....

the first day after doing a little tweaking with XP registry i had 366kb/seg downloading from downloads.com but now i can't get upper than 40Kb/seg (if im lucky to reach that speed)

can they "cap" my modem from their offices?

any help would be apreciatted!

with cable modems, unlike DSL, you don't have a dedicated connection. Other people in your neighborhood,
apartment building, etc. use the same...so if they've gotten more subscribers in your area, this is a likely reason for
any minor performance degredation you may notice. Mine was much the same. Got cable as soon as the service was available locally, and it was quite speedy...over time it's slowed down,
but I'd say it's really probably "normalized".

Everyone's cable modem is capped. It's how your ISP controls how much bandwidth each subscriber gets.
If you sign up for, say a 512/128 package, rather than a 1024/256 package, they adjust what your section of the line
can achieve. The uncapping process just circumvents that, by telling the internal modem software (firmware) to
ignore, or change the settings obtained from the incoming line, or by other means.

It's easy for them to tell, because when they look to see where all their bandwidth is going, all of a sudden there's
someone there using some astronomical amount.

They really frown on it.
To the point of criminal prosecution and large fines.

If you kept it to some reasonable speed, as someone else suggested, they might not notice or care....

How far you wanna let em hang?
Thats the question.

ah! penis-envy!
Now I understand.

Have you installed all the reg tweaks from speedguide.net?
It can depend on about a thousand different things though....call your ISP, see what they say?

Perhaps it's physical connection problem. Maybe there is a loose wire or cable that produces 'noise' on the line.

the link doesnt have any "tutorial" on uncapping a modem....its just info on how they work....pretty useful for people that are still confused if they uncap their modems...

take it from me and from the guy that wrote the article

It would be easier if "uncapping" were simply a myth end to end, then I wouldn't have to explain all this. Point is still the same though. If you have DOCSIS, you get what you pay for. Stop trying to steal from your neighbors, they'll be happier and you'll be happier.
peace out
DWk
