Torrents definitely seem to be getting the job done. I think it will become even more popular with the advancements in phones and portable music devices lately (thanks largely to Apple). There is actually a torrent app that runs on my iPod touch!
Edit: to answer your question, I don't think torrents will be replaced any time soon, but look for the emergence of mobile torrenting in the next few years!
The future can be found in the past, Usenet (newsgroups).
Older than dirt and still getting the job done better than ever.
Plus edonkey is so slow... I use the ed2k network occasionally with Shareaza to find really rare files. Sometimes it'll take a week or two to finish a small file. But on the other hand, when it's the only place you can find it, it does get the job done eventually...
I wish I could use emule again. Sometimes, there's stuff i can't find as torrents and I know for a fact that it'll be on emule. But now that I have a router, I have no idea how to set it up so I dont bother really
Anyway, the next way to download I think will be through servers not trackers if you know what I mean.
Like direct links to sites like rapidshare. You always download at full speed and don't have to worry about poor seeders...
