ROFL - I can't believe I didn't get that one right away :D I'm sorry guys, but it looks like DLE and Gkraker have got it. I'll explain it for the less interlectually gifted so they know what you two figured out :D

You can try decrypting this names with any code involved numbers & a cypher (e.g. the common A-1 code with variations) and spend a lifetime try to get it (like I almost did ). This is not a puzzle where you read between the lines - It's a puzzle where you just plain see.

The text is written in "Calculator Code" - For anyone above the age of 30, a school trick used by immature pupils to pass boring lessons by writing any half-explicit phrase ("Boobless", for example <_<). You type a specific set of numbers and you read the display upside down to see words spelt out. This is what this puzzle is.

Type in any of the words into a calculator, and you'll see the names mentioned. To make it simple, I'll do the key here for those cipher-loyalists around here :P [COLOR=red]0 = O, 1 = I, 3 = E, 5 = S, 7 = L. Those translated equal

31770 = OLLIE
317537 = LESLIE
31573 = ELSIE

Congrats to Gkraker and DLE for that - Now it'll be interesting who gets the cigar for this one that I've missed one for a change :D

OK, here we go....round three:

You've come home from work and through the front window you see the neighbors' asshole dog inside your house, snarling & growling at you. The note on the door says that your wife was asked to dog-sit for the weekend and she's gone out for a few hours. You really need to get in your house immediately but you know without a doubt that the dog hates you and given the slightest opportunity, won't hesitate to tear your arm off. How are you going to enter your house ?

Illuminati
06-28-2003, 01:17 PM
I'm guessing that you'd have to get a female dog in the house to distract the dog while you get in and get what you need. If you need to stay in a lot longer, just use the female dog to attract the arsehole dog out of the house while you do a mickey and dive in and shut him out of the house

This is one which I'm not sure is right - There is a riddle similar to this, where instead there's a smart-arse kid who tries to sneak into an apple orchard while there's a Doberman in it. My answer's kinda a variation from that.

Now while this cigar's still smoking, should I start a trick where I smoke a cigar through each nostril and exhale through my mouth? ;)

Judging by what you just said (my emphasis on the bold), I'm guessing by opening the front door and walking in through the open door ;) Maybe I'm thinking too simple, but it seems that the dog's a red herring to distract you.

Because it wouldn't mean you doing 2,000-3,000 in ten minutes - It'll mean doing 2-3,000 in ten minutes.

That would leave an average of up to 5 minutes allowed per push-up - Even the stereotypical fat kid could do that :D

ok, quite an old one now. if you've heard it give others a chance first please:

There are 100 prisoners in a prison. In the center of the prison is a room with only one entrance. The entire room is isolated from the rest of the prison (i.e. no one can see in). The only thing the room contains is a sole light that can be turned on and off. The warden begins placing a random prisoner in the room each night, and lets them turn the light on or off. He explains to the prisoners that if one of them comes to him, and tells him that all 100 of them have been in the room, he will let them go, but if they are wrong, all the prisoners will be killed for their stupidity. The prisoners are allowed to meet one night and discuss their plan, but they can have no contact from then on out. What plan can guarantee them success?

Illuminati
06-29-2003, 04:29 PM
They agree that the first time each prisoner goes in, they make a notch in the room (e.g. on the wall), and only the first time (i.e. no notch on the second or thereafter time if that happens). They can either bring something in to do the notch or break the bulb to get the glass shards.

When the last prisoner goes in, he should know that he is after seeing 99 notches on the wall. He'll know then that with him included, all 100 prisoners have been in the room and can confidently say that all of the prisoners have been in the room.

Well that's my best guess ;)

@billy - Could do that, but it'd probably leave the illusion of my arse on fire, not to mention if I have a vindaloo I could become a walking flamethrower ;)

A guy has to a cross a river filled with man eating animals, by climbing a bridge to get to a princess with whom he wants to stay for the rest of his life. but on the bridge is a guard who will chase him back as soon as he is spotted. the guard sleeps for 5mins and watches for 10mins and the guy can cross the bridge in 7 mins. How can he ever get to the princess at the top of the bridge without being spotted.

another one:

You have 3 piles of pennies in 8 rows. They add up to 9 each way, across and down. It's a square with nothing in the middle. You get 4 more pennies. Total of 28 pennies. Arrange the pennies in 8 rows to equal 9 every way that you can add them. You can take pennies away from a pile or add to the piles and the number of pennies in each pile do not have to be the same. For example you can have a pile of 2,and a pile of 3, and so forth. But they have to add up to 9, across, down and vertically if needed. They can be put in any shape. It does not have to be a square. You have to use all 28 pennies.

also, there are still a few possibilites left for my last one...

sorry, i just read it back and it doesn't make a lot of sense unless you know the answer or have seen the working.
i'll explain it more clearly.

you have to make a set of piles (stacks) and rows (lines) of coins such that the total number of coins in each row is 9

for example, if you have coins like this:

3 4 2

where 3 means a pile of 3 coins, 4 means a pile of 4 coins and so on

does this explain it enough?

Again, the wording is a little confusing...

You say, "by climbing a bridge"

I've never encountered a bridge that required climbing - only crossing.

But based on the premise that he must cross "without being spotted" and not merely cross without being caught by the guard, I guess he would need to begin at the moment the guard falls asleep - move to the underneath side just before the guard awakens and then hang there for 10 minutes - and resume crossing once the guard falls asleep again.

Or he could possibly make the entire trek on the underneath side (which would require great upper-body strength).

Both of those answers would be providing of course that the "man eating animals" can't reach the underside of the bridge. ;)

i forgot to give the answer :(

i'm not going senile honest, please don't put me in that nursing home

please :(

anyway, here's the answer...

(i copied this from another page, i don't claim the credit for solving it by the way)

"I think I have solved this riddle if I have interpreted it right, it is a bit hard to work out what is meant from the wording... as it sounds as if the authors are not particularly good at english, i had to reword it. if this is wrong then my solution is wrong. as i understand it,there are 8 piles, three pennies in each pile arranged like

000

0 0

000 a square with nothing in the middle
if you add across or down any row except the middle one, you get 9 pennies as it says now we want a square exactly like this, but we must use 28 pennies, not 24 so, after thinking for a while I set this problem up as a series of simple math equations first letter the board like this

abc

d e

fgh

now let each letter be a variable representing the numbe of coins in that pile
set up the equations

a + b + c + d + e + f + g + h = 28 // must have 28 coins

a + b + c = 9 // top row = 9

a + d + f = 9 // left vertical = 9

f + g + h = 9 // bottom row = 9

c + e + h = 9 // right vertical = 9

solving these equations simultaneously, a moderately long process that will not be repeated here, gives the simple equation:
b + g = 10

this cannot be reduced further and suggests that there are multiple solutions to the problem, probably at least 4 or 5. nevertheless, choosing the most obvious values, b = 5, g = 5 we now have the following square

?5?

? ?

?5?

none of the equations relate b and g to a third variable explicitly, so we have another choice, and more solutions. Still, the top row = 9, ie a + b + c = 9, ie a + 5 + c = 9, ie a + c = 4

choose again a common value, both equal to 2 and we have the following square

252

? ?

?5?

next one of the equations that can be gotten by writing out and solving the equations simultaneously is 9 - b - c + d + f = 9, ie d + f = b + c, ie d + f = 7 again, arbitrarily choose two values, I chose d = 4, f = 3 now we have the square

252

4 ?

35?

obviously the bottom right hand corner must be 1

252

4 ?

351

and obviously the right middle square must be 6

add all the squares up and the total is ... 28

add all the rows and or columns up, and the total is .. 9

therefore a solution to the problem is

252

4 6

351

This is not a unique solution. Unless I have misinterpreted the question, this is one of the many solutions to this riddle."

Holy theory of relativity Batman ! The answer to that last one caused major painage in the brainpan ! :P

Whaddya say we dumb it down to my level for a few ? ;)

I have an enormous capacity for remembering all the words to every song I've ever heard in my lifetime. So, I will bet you anything you'd care to bet that I can type the lyrics to a genuine song ( you can check its authenticity ) that contains the first and last name of your wife, girlfriend, husband, boyfriend or pet hamster.

How can I be so confident that I will not lose this bet ?

My guess would be that as they were born a half-hour apart, they'd seem like identical twins. The passports would be forgeries, and would be fool-proof...except they'd have different dates of birth. AFAIK, identical twins can't have DOBs other than on the same day or adjacent days at the furthest. It was just a case that Fritz was seen to first and Hans was the second one to go through, aka bad luck :)

Now I'm not sure whether a cigar's coming this way...will it? won't it?

Illuminati - close but no cigar.

Soul is the correct answer. Well done n00b, Dave.

Here's a harder one:

There is a common English word that is nine letters long.
Each time you remove a letter from it, it still remains an English word - from nine letters right down to a single letter.
What is the original word, and what are the words that it becomes after removing one letter at a time?

Has anyone noticed that there's a quirk in the machinery lately ? It seems that when someone posts a reply that has to start on a new page, it doesn't show up until a second reply is posted. For example, on the main Lounge page, it showed that illuminati was the last person to respond to this thread....but when you click on the last page of the thread to read it....only 2nd gen's reply was visible...there was no page 90. But now that I've replied, we'll be able to see this page. This has happened a few times in the last couple days. Freaky.

No clue needed 2nd gen noob, as u have just snatched the cigar from illuminati's clasping fingers

Hans happened to be born the day after Fritz. ie 12th of July and 13th july
Because americans write the date differently to Europeans, Hans wrote down an impossible date of birth and was immediately suspected.

None, I just edited in an explanation in my earlier post (to get around flood control) . It just gave a reason to make the difference between American and European date format important

ok, a new one:

One day a mysterious figure burst into Sallys Shop and posed her with a puzzle. Slapping down a huge amount of money on the counter, he said 'Divide $1083 (whole increments, no change) into a number of bags, so that I can ask for any amount between $1 and $1083, and you can give me the proper amount by giving me a certain number of these bags without opening them. If you are correct, you keep the Money. If you aren't, I get your entire shop. Sally , being a very smart woman takes the challenge. What is the fewest number of bags sally will require?

Someone revive illuminati...wave some Cubans under his nose !

As I'm typing this ( hunt & peck, search & stab ) I realize that someone else will most likely have already posted another riddle or 3 or 4 so I'll apologize in advance for posting out of turn. K ? Here goes.....

If you multiply together the number of fingers on 1 person's right hand, with the number of fingers on another person's right hand, on and on until you get the product of the fingers on the right hands of everyone in the world, what is the final total?
For example..5 fingers x 5 fingers = 25. 25 x 5 = 125. 125 x 5 = 625 etc.etc. until everyone's fingers are multiplied.

5^6 billionish

Illuminati

<Illuminati starts babbling unconcious talk>

Uh...5 to the power of 4 (thumbs don't count), all to the power of how many people there are in the world.

Hence, 625 to the power of the number of people in the world at any one time.

The number changes every day, so there's hardly a static answer for it - Only a dynamic answer derived from 625 to the power of how many people there are in the world.
